What is Zarzuela?

Zarzuela is the Spanish musical theater. It is the equivalent of French opera comique, German Singspiel or Italian opera bufa.

Zarzuela began during the reign of King Felipe IV. The King and his court would go the the Real Sitio del Pardo callec La Zarzuela, its name derived from the word "zarza" meaning "blackberry bush" which surrounded the building. In the royal halls of La Zarzuela, music was presented, comics would act and singers would sing for the enjoyment of the King and his royal court.
